Sonic Corp. is the largest chain of drive-in restaurants in America. In 1953, the prototype of the first Sonic Drive-In opened in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Now, more than 50 years and 3,500 drive-ins later, Sonic enjoys the highest customer frequency rate in the quick-service restaurant industry with average unit sales of more than $1.1 million annually. Sonic is known for its made-to-order American classics, signature menu items, speedy service from friendly Carhops and heaping helpings of fun and personality.
In 2010, Sonic Corp. identified gaps and operational inefficiencies in their supply chain and reached the conclusion that adding more people was not the most effective way to address these challenges. Sonic began the process of evaluating available technology platforms but came up short. The closest match lacked important functionality and offered little more than the ability to share documents. What Sonic really needed was a solution that was data-driven, easy to integrate and provided a flexible workflow engine to enable business processes. Sonic needed a solution that could provide customizable reporting and powerful analytics.
In late 2010, Sonic Corp began working with ComplianceMetrix. After an intensive review of the platform, including a buy vs. build analysis, Sonic ultimately chose the SupplyChainMetrix™ (SMX) Supply Chain Management solution. The solution went live in Q1 of 2011 and now manages Sonic’s 300+ suppliers and provides direct interfaces to their third-party audit provider. SMX manages hundreds of products, ingredients, nutritional information and allergens for Sonic. SMX also tracks critical documents and records, including supplier certifications, product specifications and contracts, in addition to facility audits and product evaluations.
SupplyChainMetrix™ has dramatically improved Sonic’s supply chain quality by creating operational efficiencies and resolving issues more effectively, through improved record keeping, automated workflows and insightful reporting. With a few clicks of the mouse, Quality Managers can pinpoint issues, identify systemic problems and evaluate the overall status of a supplier’s compliance with Sonic’s standards. Additionally, key performance indicators (KPI’s) tell managers and executives how each component of the supply chain is performing. Suppliers also benefit by having a clear understanding of Sonic’s expectations and a systematic approach to fulfill them. With SMX, Sonic and its suppliers are saving time, money and effort.
